and finally ....... after four years of hard work Dunshalt once again has its own shop. And it is a bit different. It is owned by the local community!
The Shop operates as a Community Benefit Society, and any profit made must be used for the benefit of the community. The purchase of the shop was facilitated by a grant of £97,500 from the Scottish Land Fund (SLF) and a community shares offer which raised £31,770. 225 people purchased shares, of whom more than 70% are resident within the KY14 postcode area. A magnificent effort from a village with a population of just over 200!
Further funding was received from the LEADER Fund which supports local rural community and business networks and encourages innovation and cooperation to tackle local development objectives. This allowed for the complete renovation and extension of the premises.
The Prince's Countryside Fund awarded £25,000 to contribute to the fitting out of the shop and staffing costs.
With work finally completed and staff appointed the shop once again opened its doors in March 2020, stocking all the usual essentials, daily newspapers, fresh local produce, quality groceries, cakes, bakes and bread, artisan butcher meat, home made soups and sandwiches, great wines and a fantastic coffee.
